The Penn Radiation Medicine Institute: Global Education and Consultancy Services

With more than a decade of experience, The University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Radiation Oncology provides a comprehensive, one-week program offered twice annually in the spring and winter. The course is designed to maximize the onsite experience by delivering a core curriculum while allowing room for customization based on role responsibilities and disease-site interests. The curriculum is taught from a broad, non–vendor-specific perspective to ensure the content applies to any proton center.

Participants complete role-specific online preparatory modules prior to arrival, ensuring a strong baseline understanding. The onsite portion focuses on immersive, hands-on learning, including observation and engagement in patient selection and education, simulation, imaging, treatment planning and delivery workflows, chart review, and follow-up care.

This past November, the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Radiation Oncology welcomed a diverse group of learners to its proton therapy clinical education course—an intensive, one-week experience designed for those new to proton therapy or seeking a comprehensive refresher.

Twelve participants arrived from across five U.S. states and two countries, representing a wide range of clinical and technical disciplines. Physicians, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, administrators, and industry partners all came together with a shared goal: to deepen their understanding of how proton therapy is delivered safely, efficiently, and with unwavering focus on patients. Several attendees represented developing proton centers, while others came from established programs or vendors looking to strengthen their clinical insight.
